About Us
The Donate Your Car program is a quick and easy way to make a significant contribution to Kids Under Cover. It's a simple process of donating your vehicle to Kids Under Cover who collect your vehicle and retain the profits from its subsequent sale at auction. The profits then go to helping us continue our vital work building homes and providing scholarship and mentors for homeless and at-risk young people. It's quick and easy! * If your vehicle is located in a regional or rural area (further than 75 kilometres from a Capital City), please call us on 03 9429 7444 before you de-register to make sure we can actually collect your vehicle.
Kids Under Cover's car donation process is quick and easy. There are only 2 steps to follow; we take care of the rest. 1. Donate your car Click here to fill in the “Vehicle Details” form online. The “Vehicle Details” form provides Kids Under Cover and the auction house with detailed information to estimate the value of the vehicle prior to its collection and subsequent sale. It would be great if you could attach a photo if your vehicle is valued over $500. We will use the photo on our website to attract potential buyers. Please contact Laura at Kids Under Cover on 1800 801 633 for more information. 2. De-registration Before we can collect your vehicle, regardless of whether your registration is current or has lapsed, you need to call or visit your state vehicle registration authority to deregister the vehicle and take the number plates off. This ensures the vehicle is no longer in your name and protects you from any future financial obligations relating to the vehicle (fines etc). If your vehicle is located in a regional or rural area (further than 75 kilometres from a Capital City), please call us on 03 9429 7444 before you de-register to make sure we can actually collect your vehicle. 3. Collection Once we receive your “Vehicle Details” form, we will call you to arrange the collection of the vehicle. On the day of the collection, our partners at Manheim will send a towing truck to collect the vehicle and take it to the nearest Manheim location. All you need to do prior to the collection is:
There is no need to stay at home or take a day off work. You can simply leave the keys in your letterbox or on top of the wheel on the driver’s side. 4. Auction All vehicles are auctioned at Manheim at the special Kids Under Cover auction. Manheim is Australia’s largest provider of automotive auction services. Manheim doesn’t repair any of the vehicles; the vehicle is sold as it is. Kids Under Cover retain the net proceeds generated from the sale of your vehicle. 5. Thank you Kids Under Cover’s vision is for all young people to have the opportunity to reach their full potential. We do this by building homes and providing scholarships and mentors for young people who are at risk of becoming homeless. We build one and two bedroom fully demountable studios (with bathroom) in the backyard of the family or carer’s backyard. This way, the studios allows families to stay together, eases the pressure of overcrowding and provides the young person with a secure and stable environment in which to grow into healthy adulthood. While living in a Kids Under Cover studio, the young person is also eligible for a scholarship and mentor. Without the support from people like you we would not be able to help disadvantaged young people who are at risk of becoming homeless. On behalf of all the young people we have supported over the past 22 years, thank you! If you have any questions about the Donate Your Car program, please call us on 03 9429 7444. Eliminates the hassle and cost of selling privately Donate Your Car is as simple as making a phone call and signing over ownership to Kids Under Cover. There is no need to haggle over low trade-in with a car dealer, advertise for a private sale, or obtain a roadworthy certificate. Making a difference A car donation to Kids Under Cover is a significant contribution which helps us change the lives of homeless and at risk young people. Claim the donation on your tax return If your vehicle is valued at more than $5,000 the Australian Taxation Office (under sections 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act, 1997) allows a tax deduction – a wonderful reward for helping young people in need. If your vehicle is valued at less than $5000 and you would like to get a tax deduction, we recommend that you sell your vehicle privately and donate the proceeds to Kids Under Cover. Once we have received your donation, we will send you a receipt.
Who pays for collecting and auctioning the vehicles? All towing and auction services are kindly donated to us by Manheim. Kids Under Cover receives 100% of the proceeds generated by the sale of your car. We are very proud to have Manheim as a Gold Partner and we appreciate their commitment to collecting all vehicles at the preferred date. Do you collect cars from anywhere in Australia? Yes, we can collect vehicles from anywhere in Australia. However please be mindful that due to transport costs involved in collecting vehicles, some vehicles may not be suitable to the program. If the vehicle is located in a rural or regional area (further than 75 kilometres from a Capital City), please call us on 03 9429 7444 to see whether your car will suit the program. What types of vehicles are accepted? Kids Under Cover accepts cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats with proper title information, no matter what condition. What if the vehicle is not running? The vehicle does not have to be running, but you will be asked to provide details regarding the condition of the vehicle. Does my car need to be registered? Kids Under Cover only accepts unregistered vehicles. It's easy to deregister your vehicle – just call your state Vehicle Registration Authority. How long will it take for my vehicle to be picked up? Once Kids Under Cover has received your donation forms, we will contact you to organise the collection of your vehicle within seven working days (or sooner by negotiation) depending on the location of the vehicle. What are the tax benefits of donating my vehicle? If you believe the vehicle (or collection of vehicles) is valued at more than $5,000, please contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or a financial advisor for more information about a possible tax deduction on your income tax return. How do I know my vehicle is in good hands once it's been picked up? Kids Under Cover uses a fully licensed and insured towing service, organised by Manheim. What happens if my vehicle has finance owing on it? Kids Under Cover cannot accept vehicles with finance owing. Please ensure your contract has been terminated prior to donating the vehicle. Are there other ways I can help Kids Under Cover? Yes, there are lots of ways you can contribute to continue the vital work Kids Under Cover does. For example, you could hold your own fundraising events, you could donate through your workplace, organise with your workplace some corporate volunteering with us, you could make a simple cash donation or you could consider leaving a bequest in your will, the options are endless! This 1972 VW superbug was generously donated by Kids Under Cover supporter, Erin Lewis, as part of the Donate Your Car program. The Smart Repair and Rectification team at Manheim kindly donated their time and materials to spray “Bernie” bright yellow and cover the car with Kids Under Cover stickers.
