Seller's Description
Mercedes-Benz released the 280SL in 1967 as their range topping model of the highly successful W113 sports series. By the time of its introduction, consumers had resigned to the fact that its smaller siblings the 230SL and 250SL had become more focused on being a comfortable grand tourer than an outright open top sports car. Acknowledging this demand for a more powerful version, MB bored their current M180 engine block to its limits to produce the new 2.8L I6 engine which produced 170bhp. What had resulted was a Mercedes-Benz sports car that could offer their usual lashings of luxury with the nimble performance the drivers had been yearning for. More than half of the 23,885 units produced were exported to the U.S. This vehicle was first sold new in California, USA in 1969 and was factory ordered white with contrasting black hardtop. Much of its early history is unknown until the vehicle was imported by its previous owner in the early 2000s. It then underwent a ground up restoration including a back to bare metal respray, top end engine rebuild and new period correct interior trim. The vehicle retains its original owner’s manual, log/service books, receipts and import documentation. Today it presents in excellent overall condition.
