    1976 FORD GRAN TORINO (starsky & hutch) This 1974 Ford Torino is the real deal this vehicle was the main car used in the Starsky and Hutch Film made in 2004 with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson. The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), which is considered the Detroit (primary automobile production city) of Italy. The Torino was initially an upscale version of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1970.     Twelve cylinder engines are synonymous with Ferrari. In fact, Enzo Ferrari’s very first car, the 1947 125S was powered by a 1.5 Litre V12 engine. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s the majority of Enzo’s masterpieces were powered by V12 engines of varying capacity. Interestingly all of these cars had the engine located in the front. Cross town rivals Lamborghini introduced their stunning Miura in 1966, which was powered by a transversely mounted V12 engine located behind the driver. This spectacular car took the motoring world by storm and sent shock waves throughout Ferrari HQ in Maranello. Ferraris answer, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, was a fabulous motor car in its own right, but there was always something about the mid-engined sports car that gave it an edge. It took until 1971 for Ferrari to unveil its first mid-engined sports car, the 365 GT/4 Berlinetta Boxer. The Boxer was very well received and it ultimately went into production and replaced the Daytona in 1973. Interestingly Ferrari opted for a ‘flat 12’ rather than a V12 engine configuration. The engine was mounted longitudinally rather than transversely as Lamborghini did with the Miura. The Boxer was a great success for Ferrari and along with the Lamborghini Countach was one of the very real ‘supercars of the seventies’. The 365 GT/4 Berlinetta Boxer (387 cars built) was replaced by the 512 Berlinetta Boxer (929 cars built) in 1976, which was then replaced by the 512 BBi (1007 cars built) in 1981. The Boxer was ultimately replaced by the Testarossa (or ‘red head’ so named to commemorate the fabulous Ferrari race cars of the 1950’s – the Testa Rossas) in 1984. Oldtimer Australia has had the privilege of selling a number of Ferrari 365 and 512 Berlinetta Boxers over the years and we know these cars very well. We are absolutely delighted to offer for sale this incredible 1978 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer or 512BB as the car is often referred. This particular car is an Australian delivered, factory right hand drive example that was collected as a tourist delivery new from the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy by its first owner in May 1978. He kept the car at his home in Monaco, using it in the UK and Europe before bringing it to Australia (Sydney) in April 1984. He owned the car through until February 1995 at which time the mileage was 9,399 miles. The car’s second owner was also in Sydney and he owned the car for some eight years before selling in February 2003. The mileage then was 16,585 miles. The car was repainted in October 2001. The third owner of this 512BB, who was in Adelaide, acquired the car in February 2003. He was a passionate Ferrari enthusiast who also used the car sparingly during his ten years of ownership. When the car was sold to its fourth owner, based in Perth, in February 2013 the odometer was at 20,143 miles. The car was again sold in February 2017 to a collector and it is now surplus to his requirements. Today the odometer reads 20,477 miles. The car presents immaculately inside and out. It starts easily on a turn of the key and soon settles into a smooth idle. After driving this 512BB for five minutes it is very obvious that this is a wonderfully sorted car. The engine pulls like a train, the gear change is tight and the car performs as one would expect . . . it’s magnificent. And the sound . . . just wow! The paint work is excellent and it is vibrant with a great depth of colour. The red (rosso corsa) / satin black colour scheme is iconic on a Boxer and it is complemented beautifully by the magnolia (tan) and black interior. The panel gaps are excellent all round and both doors, the front & rear clips open and close like they would have done back in 1978. The car is as clean inside as it is outside. The cockpit is just a lovely place to be. The seats, door cards, dash etc. are all immaculate and ‘like new’. Even the carpets are in great shape! All of the instruments, controls and the (often worn) gear shift knob are similarly in excellent condition. Under the front clip everything is also very clean and in excellent condition. The engine bay is immaculate and the only thing we have picked that is not correct on the car is that the air cleaner box covers look to have been repainted in the wrong shade! The wheels are ‘clean’ and the car is fitted with correct Michelin XWX tyres. In 2011 the car was treated to a major mechanical overhaul which included: the removal and refurbishment of both cylinder heads, the replacement of all the exhaust valves, the head gaskets & seals were replaced and the timing belts and tensioners replaced. The carburettors were also re-built and a new exhaust system heat wrap was applied. The car was last serviced by Barbagallo Ferrari in Perth in July 2016. This classic Ferrari has to be one of the most original, well cared for, low mileage and fully maintained 512BB’s on the planet, period!
