Subaru’s 2010 Liberty GT Premium has extra equipment, a more powerful engine, some detailed cosmetic changes and a few chassis tweaks bringing it to the top of the mid-size passenger car segment.
WHAT DO YOU GET? Standard equipment on the 2.5i includes Sat/Nav, dual-zone climate control, a rear camera, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, a multi-function leather steering wheel, cruise control and front fog lights. The 2.5i wagon gets new 17-inch alloys as well.
WHAT’S INSIDE? The Liberty’s cockpit is a busy place given the number of controls on the redesigned steering wheel, on the centre console and the touchscreen display itself, but the good news is it’s all pretty easy to learn and has a nicely integrated look.
The 2010 GT Premium features leather seats, 18in alloys, powered sunroof, reversing camera, proximity key and gearshift paddles.
The front seats come with memory settings and are comfortable and supportive and there’s not much to complain about when it comes to available space. The rear seat has ample knee room and the roofline liberates enough head room for taller passengers.
UNDER THE BONNET The latest version of Subaru’s boxer turbocharged 2.5 engine is punchy and puts out 195 kW with 350Nm of torque.
Together with the lighter, more efficient 5 speed transmission that equates to about 9.7 l/ 100 kms.
ON THE ROAD Detailed changes to the Liberty’s suspension, steering and all-wheel-drive system have been aimed at more precise and stable handling and seem to have been entirely successful. The driver might not notice that drive is apportioned from front to rear according to steering angle and lateral forces during normal conditions, but on slippery roads it is helpful.
The basics are that the Liberty steers very well, grips hard from both ends and can be pushed a little bit harder than average without losing its composure.
The suspension gives a good blend of absorption and control, there’s little in the way of road noise, the driver’s seat is comfortable and supportive and on the whole, there’s little to fault with the driving experience.
